"My College Coaches Really Helped Me," Laura Haas '83 Tells Ohio Newspaper

April 12, 2006

Laura Haas.jpgApril 12, 2006, Greencastle, Ind. - Laura C. Haas, head softball coach and health teacher at Summit Country Day School in Cincinnati and 1983 graduate of DePauw University, "was a four-sport athlete at Highlands High School in Northern Kentucky before moving on to play three sports at Division III DePauw University in Indiana," notes today's Community Press & Recorder. The Ohio newspaper profiles Haas in a column headlined "Who's Coaching Our Kids?"

"I was blessed to have great coaches in high school and college," Haas says. "My college coaches really helped me see what I wanted to do and be. Ken Shields was the boys' basketball coach at Highlands when I was there. He was just a great role model. Also, the boy's baseball coach at DePauw (Ed Meyer) helped me through a significant injury when I was there. Neither of them was a direct coach of mine, but both helped me out in a significant way."

The coach is asked about the most rewarding part of her job. "The relationships that I have built with players and lilly center autumn.jpgcoaching staff," she responds. "Some of my best memories have come from the kids I have coached. Some of the alumni have come back to be on my coaching staff. That is very rewarding. Some of my best friendships over the years have come from my coaches."
