English Testing and Placement

DePauw's writing-intensive courses are designed to teach college-level thinking through college-level writing and to help students communicate their ideas clearly and effectively.

First-year degree-seeking international students are required to take a written assessment upon arrival at DePauw. If it is determined that the student would benefit from supplemental English language or writing instruction, the student is placed in English 110 or English 115. In addition, all first-year students take a writing-intensive First-Year Seminar.

International exchange students also participate in the placement process, although enrollment is optional.

All international students are welcome to consult about English language skills with the Director of English for Academic Purposes, and may also seek assistance at the Writing Center.
