wear$: For the Data Driven Shopper

Bridget Kelley

Everyone owns clothing that they never wear, right? What if there was a tool that could deter people from impulsive shopping and track the value of their clothes over time? Now there is. wear$ is a website that tracks the cost per wear of articles of clothing. Users can calculate the cost per wear of an item before purchasing it to see if it is a smart financial decision. wear$ can also track the cost per wear of clothing already owned by the user. That data can inform future purchases of items and aid users in the process of cleaning out their closets.

Users will add the name, a photo, link, number of wears and the price of any item they purchase. Over time as the user wears an article of clothing, they can update the total number of wears of that product. The cost per wear of the clothing item is calculated by dividing the total cost of the item by the number of wears. A user can utilize their cost per wear to see which items in their closet they do not wear frequently and what types of products they typically get the most wear out of. This process can also be done with an article of clothing that has not been bought yet so that users can see how many times they would need to wear an item to get their money’s worth from the purchase. Using data generated through the wear$ website, consumers take back the power to make smart decisions and end the cycle of constant consumption.
