Computer Science Department

Computing enables you to make a positive difference in the world.

According to the Association of Computing Machinery:
"Computing drives innovation in the sciences (human genome project, AIDS vaccine research, environmental monitoring and protection just to mention a few), and also in engineering, business, entertainment and education. If you want to make a positive difference in the world, study computing."

At DePauw:
Computer Science projects at DePauw have considered problems with the potential to impact a wide range of people. For example, projects have explored the development of technology to help patients predict the onset of migraine headaches, the exploration of assistive technology for students with low-vision, the development of computing systems to assist with medical imaging and diagnosis and the study of gender equity in computer science. Recently a team of students even worked on an independent project to remind HIV patients to take medications according to a strict schedule. The team was awarded first-runner up in the finals of the 2009 United States Microsoft Imagine Cup (you can read more about their successes here).
