Emergency & Crisis Interventions
What constitutes an emergency & how to access Counseling Services during an emergency?
DePauw University Counseling Services staff offers same day "emergency assessment and crisis interventions" to all students experiencing life threatening emergencies during regular office hours. Emergency walk-in hours are at 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. We realize that emergencies don't always occur during our walk-in hours, if you arrive outside of our walk-in hours we will make sure that you can speak with the next available counselor.
Examples of life threatening emergencies consist of:
suicidal and/or homicidal thoughts
recent sexual assault, harassment, experience with interpersonal violence and/or stalking
other recent traumatic event
alcohol and/or drug withdrawal
active psychosis (i.e., hallucinations and/or delusions)
Recent experience of discrimination and/or prejudice
When an emergency occurs during regular office hours (Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.):
1) Walk into our office and request an emergency appointment*
* It is important that you let our Front Office Manager know that you are experiencing a life threatening emergency
