Interviewing Tips for Search Chairs

Interviewing can be stressful, not only for the candidate, but for the Interviewer! Here are 6 tips for better interviews:

  1. Be prepared: Prep on the candidate’s resume/CV and have questions ready to go when interviewing. If you are not prepared, this is a disservice to the candidate. Provide the candidate with as much information as possible about the position to determine if this is the right role for them.
  2. Be respectful: Give candidates your undivided attention, put them at ease and be transparent about the process. Don’t be late; respect their time. Be genuine and attentive.
  3. Build rapport: Establish trust and a genuine connection to build the foundation of a good relationship. Create a comfortable atmosphere for the candidate. Smile and maintain eye contact, offer them something to drink. Introduce yourself and others and give brief summaries of your roles. Remember-Candidates will tell others about their experience!
  4. Communicate well and often: Be responsive and maintain a high level of communication with your candidates. Explain the process and timeline. Ask if the candidate has any questions.
  5. Listen more than you talk.
  6. Refresh your knowledge of our mission and vision, as well as the benefits and perks of the position you are hiring for.
