2015 Aluminum Pour

On Friday, October 2nd, 2015, the Department of Art and Art History at DePauw University will welcome the Sculpture Trails Traveling Foundry for a Community Aluminum Pour.  Community members of all ages are invited to come create an original piece of art, cast from 100% recycled aluminum.

During the open carving workshops in Peeler Art Center, held on September 21st through September 24th from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM, participants carve their design into a sand block.  On October 2nd at 11:30 AM in Peeler 103 the Sculpture Trails founder, Gerry Masse, will present an open discussion on environmentally and socially sensitive art practices titled “Art, Matter, and Art that Matters: Working in the Non-Profit Art Sector”.  Following the lecture, the foundry team will spend the day casting aluminum into the carved tiles, an increasingly rare art making process that involves heating and pouring molten metal into a carved or formed mold.  The Aluminum Pour will take place from 1:00 PM to 10:00 PM in the back courtyard of Peeler Art Center.  All events are free and open to the public.  Carving tiles are limited to the first 200 participants.

Sculpture Trails is a non-profit organization based in Solsberry, Indiana dedicated to giving communities access to first-hand experiences with art in natural settings.  Through a series of projects, including the Traveling Foundry, the Outdoor Museum, and Iron Pour Workshops, Sculpture Trails is committed to environmentally and socially sensitive art practices.  The organization hosts artists of all skill levels and ages on-site and in communities across the country, allowing direct experience the historic art of metal casting in a natural setting.

Support for the Traveling Foundry Event is generously provided by the Department of Art and Art History Carol Bowers Norris Endowed Artists/Speakers Series Fund and the Public Occasions Committee.
