Boston College Economics Prof. Harold Petersen '55 Profiled in Student Newspaper
February 6, 2006
February 6, 2006, Greencastle, Ind. - "I went to DePauw University thinking I might possibly be able to be a writer," Harold A. Petersen, professor of economics at Boston College, tells that school's student newspaper, The Heights. "But then I had a freshman-year roommate named John Gardner, who became a great fiction writer. When I saw the devotion that he had to literature and writing so surpassed mine, I decided it wasn't for me." Petersen, a 1955 graduate of DePauw, has taught at BC since 1960.
"Seeing the writing on the wall, (Petersen) moved past the written word," writes the newspaper's Kevin Armstrong. "He thought about philosophy, but he also took economics classes. He enjoyed the subject, delving deeper in to the graphs and dilemmas that needed solving. In turn, he chose to pursue his doctorate at Brown University in Rhode Island." Peterson finished his studies at Wooster College, and joined the faculty of Boston College.
