Social service includes any of numerous publicly or privately provided services intended to aid disadvantaged, distressed, or vulnerable persons or groups. A nonprofit organization is a legal entity organized and operated for a collective, public, or social benefit, and any revenues that exceed expenses must be committed to the organization's purpose, not taken by private parties. A variety of career fields can be found in these areas.
Social Work
Social workers are found in every facet of community life, including schools, hospitals, mental health clinics, senior centers, elected office, private practices, prisons, military, corporations, and in numerous public and private agencies. Some social workers help clients who face a disability or a life-threatening disease or a social problem, such as inadequate housing, unemployment, or substance abuse. Social workers also assist families that have serious domestic conflicts, sometimes involving child or spousal abuse. Some social workers conduct research, advocate for improved services, engage in systems design or are involved in planning or policy development. Many social workers specialize in serving a particular population or working in a specific setting. An advanced degree is required.

Youth Development
In a youth development position, a person helps children and adolescents develop physically, emotionally and intellectually. There are many different positions within the field of youth development, such as becoming a recreation worker or a social and community service manager. Recreation workers design and implement leisure activities suitable for youths, while social and community service managers ensure that such programs are widely available across the community. These positions require a good understanding of how to communicate effectively with children across a range of ages. An advanced degree is not often required.

Community Outreach
An outreach coordinator is responsible for assisting community and fundraising programs, ensuring the smooth flow of events and participants' engagement. Outreach coordinators often work with humanitarian organizations or other nonprofit institutions to promote and develop citizens' welfare. They handle press releases, create marketing materials, negotiate with third-party vendors, book venues, finalize event schedules, and recruit volunteers as needed. An outreach coordinator also plans activities, monitors expenses, and requests financial support from sponsorships and donation programs. An advance degree is not often required.
