Community-based Service Learning

As a student in Italian, you have the opportunity of sharing what you learn in the classroom with school children in the Greencastle Community. It is a great chance to get involved in an experience that will challenge your perception of education and give you an entirely new perspective on the world around you. Teaching is also a way to strengthen your curriculum vitae, especially if you are considering applying for Teach for America, a Fulbright scholarship, or graduate school in any field. Besides becoming part of the intellectual life of our community, teaching will enhance your communicative and critical thinking skills, as well as your originality and creativity.

Students Engagement in community-based learning experiences has a transformative effect on how our students at DePauw learn, and offers a priceless intellectual enrichment for the children in our community. The video above, made by student volunteers Courtney Lehman and Alison Kirby, is a beautiful sample of how young children are ready to embrace different languages and cultures. And though their Italian may not be flawless, it is certainly obvious that they love learning it!

The “Italian Enrichment Program” is free, run exclusively by volunteers, and officially recognized by the Hubbard Center for Students Engagement. For more information, please contact fseaman@depauw.edu
