Lemon, who directs the Management Fellows Program and the Robert C. McDermond Center for Management and Entrepreneurship, and is a professor of economics and management, talked about DePauw's programs and the upcoming Symposium for DePauw Entrepreneurs.

"We have a graduate, Angie Hicks, who started Angie's List, and she started right out of school. So students are more interested I think today, trying their hand in those kinds of things, rather than the GM's and the GE's of the world."

Noting that "DePauw has been extremely successful in producing entrepreneurs and business leaders," Dick asked Lemon what's key to a strong entrepreneurial education program. "It's networking," the professor replied. "DePauw alums are very loyal, and we try to match these people up. We have them come back and do lectures, and if a student is interested in marketing or starting a business, they can talk to these people. It's a matter of sharing your ideas talking to people about what's been successful and what hasn't been successful."

"If you're in the Management Fellows program, you have to do a semester long, paid, credit bearing internship," he explained. "A lot of students do them at small firms. It's a way of getting to see how it's done and networking with those people who are out there doing it in the real world."

Lemon says the event's speakers and participants in breakout sessions will be people who have had success in building businesses who will "share their experiences. This is not going to be academics talking about 'in theory this is the way it works', but these are people who have really started their own business... what kind of mistakes they made and the kinds of things they wish they had known when they started," Lemon said.

Host Gerry Dick pointed out that one of the symposium's keynote speakers, Mary Meeker of Morgan Stanley (pictured at left), is a graduate of DePauw. You can learn more about the symposium by clicking here.

It would be wonderful if five years from now we have a success story: somebody who says, 'I went to this symposium, I had an idea, I was able to network with people, I started this business and here's what's happened.'"
