Deborah Daniels '73 to Serve as National Amber Alert Coordinator

May 1, 2003

May 1, 2003, Greencastle, Ind. - Deborah J. Daniels, assistant U.S. attorney general and a 1973 graduate of DePauw University, "will serve as the national Amber Alert coordinator... [and] will establish guidelines for the alerts," the San Bernadino Sun notes in today's edition. Yesterday, President Bush signed into law a package of child-safety measures that includes a nationwide expansion of the Amber Alert system and tougher federal penalties for those convicted of child pornography, sexual abuse and kidnapping.

The move expands the Amber network, which has been operating in 37 states, to all 50 states. When under the age of 18 who are believed to be in serious danger are reported missing, authorities broadcast an "Amber Alert" to police agencies and the media. The network is named after 9-year-old Amber Hagerman of Arlington, Texas, who was kidnapped and murdered in 1996.
