Film Studies majors must take at least one course relating to film production or writing for the screen. (Please check current schedule of courses for availability in a given semester.)
FILM 231: Topics in Digital Film Production
Topics courses in the area of digital film production. Courses may include Introduction to Digital Filmmaking or Short Film Screenwriting. Prerequisites may apply depending on the topic.

FILM 231: Tpcs in Digital Film Prod: Introduction to Digital Filmmaking
This course provides an introduction to pre-production, camerawork, sound recording, lighting, and editing in digital filmmaking, with short units on short film screenwriting and working with actors. Prerequisite: FILM 100, FILM 200 or FILM 241 or permission of the instructor.
FILM 331: Advanced Topics in Digital Film Production
Advanced topics courses in the area of digital film production. Courses may include Intermediate Digital Filmmaking, Creating the Short Film, Acting and Directing for Film, as well as Screenwriting Workshop (ENG 342). Some courses require a prerequisite or permission of the instructor.

FILM 331: Adv Tpcs in Digital Film Prod: Creating the Short Film
An upper-level course exploring the short film in production, according to instructor emphasis. Prerequisite of FILM 100, FILM 200, FILM 231, FILM 241, or instructor permission.
FILM 331: Adv Tpcs in Digital Film Prod: Screenwriting Workshop (ENG 342)
An introduction to the fundamentals of screenwriting, in theory and in practice. Students will explore story, character, dialogue and structure as relates to writing
for film; learn the screenplay format; and participate in writing workshop and
discussion. Prerequisite: ENG 149 or instructor permission.
FILM 331: Adv Tpcs in Digital Film Production: Acting and Directing for Film
Previous experience in acting or production is helpful but not required.
FILM 100, FILM 200, FILM 220, FILM 241, or FILM 231, or instructor permission.
ARTS 163: Intro to Photography
An introduction to the art of black-and-white photography, this course provides opportunities for learning personal expression, critical thinking, and the aesthetics of photography through darkroom experiences and camera assignments. A 35-millimeter camera with a manual control is required. Some cameras are available for student checkout. Please see the instructor. Not offered pass/fail.
COMM 319: Writing for the Stage, Screen and TV
A workshop approach to creative story making in the three forms of media. Emphasis is on the relationship between form and content, dramatic structure and critical response. Students are expected to complete a full length stage play, screenplay or teleplay.
