What to expect when scheduling?

How to schedule an appointment

You can call Counseling Services at 765-658-4268 or drop by to schedule an Initial Consultation at a time that is convenient to your schedule. Additionally, since many students use our services, there may be a waiting period as the semester goes on before your Initial Consultation can be scheduled.

Emergency appointments are also available at 11:00 am AND 3:00 pm daily for students experiencing significant distress and who need to be seen that same day. Emergency appointments are walk-in only. If you are in crisis, please inform the receptionist and we will make every attempt to respond to you as soon as possible.

Confidentiality Statement

Initial Consultation

Plan to arrive 15 minutes early to complete the initial paperwork. You and your counselor will then begin an assessment of your concerns and decide how Counseling Services may be of assistance to you. By the end of this appointment, your counselor will help you summarize your concerns and explore treatment options for resolving them.

Additional Appointments

If it is decided that the services offered at Counseling Services are appropriate for your needs, we will email you the name of your assigned therapist the Friday following your intake assessment and ask that you call the center to schedule an ongoing appointment with this clinician. During an early visit with your counselor, you will establish goals for counseling and determine the approximate number of sessions you will attend. Brief individual counseling sessions are typically scheduled on a bi-weekly basis for approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour per session.

Counseling Services provides short-term counseling and many issues can be addressed within this model. If at any time your counselor determines other services are better suited to your needs, Counseling Services will assist you in setting up services with appropriate off-campus providers. Ongoing appointments are available between the hours of 8:00 am and 5:00 pm  Monday through Friday.

Canceling an Appointment

If you must miss a session due to illness or emergency, please contact the center to cancel the appointment 24 hours in advance. Services at Counseling Services are offered on an appointment basis. Time is reserved in our schedules whenever a student requests services. We also provide optional email and text message reminders to help students attend these appointments. Canceling or missing appointments cause problems that go beyond a financial impact on our center. When an appointment is made, it takes an available time slot away from another client and missed appointments delay the delivery of health care to other clients, some who are in crisis.

No-Show Policy

You should be aware of the following policy that exists at Counseling Services regarding missed appointments. This policy is necessary in order to serve as many DePauw University students as possible and we regret any hardships this may cause.

Any student who misses two consecutive counseling appointments, without prior notification, will be unable to schedule additional appointments with Counseling Services for the remainder of that particular semester. Additionally, any student who misses two psychiatric appointment (even if not consecutive) without prior advance notification, will be unable to schedule additional appointments with our consulting psychiatrist for the remainder of the academic year.

The above policy does not apply to crisis situations. The center is always available during regular office hours to any DePauw University-enrolled student experiencing a crisis or psychological emergency, regardless of prior missed appointments.
