Emergency & Crisis Interventions

What constitutes an emergency & how to access Counseling Services during an emergency?

DePauw University Counseling Services staff offers same day "emergency assessment and crisis interventions" to all students experiencing life threatening emergencies during regular office hours (Monday - Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.) 

Examples of life threatening emergencies consist of: 

  • suicidal and/or homicidal thoughts

  • recent sexual assault, harassment, experience with interpersonal violence and/or stalking

  • other recent traumatic event

  • alcohol and/or drug withdrawal

  • active psychosis (i.e., hallucinations and/or delusions)

  • Recent experience of discrimination and/or prejudice

When an emergency occurs during regular office hours (Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.):

1) Call Counseling Services at 765-658-4268 to schedule  an emergency appointment* OR

2) Walk into our office and request an emergency appointment*

* It is important that you let our Front Office Manager know that you are experiencing a life threatening emergency 

When an emergency occurs outside of office hours or during university break:

1. Call Counseling Services at 765-658-4268 and you will be transferred directly to the on-call clinician.
