DePauw University President Lori S. White will share an inspiring message of lifelong learning, as she preaches the sermon at Gobin Church (305 Simpson Street, next to the Office of Admission). From DePauw's earliest days as a Methodist institution, Gobin Church has been central to the university's work and mission–hosting cultural and spiritual luminaries on campus like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In the same spirit of those many guest preachers, Dr. White continues in that faith tradition that is inclusive, justice-oriented, outward-focused, and concerned with social healing. Following the service, a free community lunch will be served on East College Lawn. |

School of Music Placement & Audition Information
Ensemble Auditions
Ensemble auditions
All Information about School of Music ensembles and audition requirements will be available at https://www.depauw.edu/music/ during the summer.
For students in the College of Liberal Arts, participation in ensembles may be applied toward arts and humanities requirements.
Voice and piano auditions
Voice:
Students who have had no previous instruction in voice should register for MUS 905, Beginning Class Voice I, when it is offered. Students in the College of Liberal Arts who have studied voice privately in high school and wish to take individual lessons will need to audition. Students should choose an audition time on the sign-up sheet on the bulletin board outside the School of Music Office. If in-person auditions are not possible, students are to record one song that best displays their vocal accomplishments. Performances with accompaniment tracks or live accompaniment are preferred, but a cappella performances will be accepted. Video is preferred and you may use whatever recording device you have available. Recordings should be emailed to André Campelo at andrecampelo@depauw.edu. If the recording file is too large to send as an email attachment, please send via Google Drive. For more information, contact André Campelo at the email provided above.
Piano placement for the School of Music
School of Music students: Professor Maria Lyapkova contacts all new music students over the summer to assess piano background and place everyone in the appropriate class sections.
All SOM students must fill out the Piano survey at the beginning of June and take an in-person Class Piano Placement Test in August before classes begin. Please contact Dr. Maria Lyapkova at marialyapkova@depauw.edu if you have any questions.
All incoming students wishing to pursue this option or anyone with questions about the piano requirements at DePauw may contact Professor Maria Lyapkova at marialyapkova@depauw.edu for more information.
Class Piano Placement Exam
- Step 1: In the summer, incoming first-year students complete an online survey describing their prior keyboard experience. This survey will predetermine whether they will be placed in 901 (the first section of the Class Piano sequence).
- Step 2: At the beginning of the fall semester, all incoming music students (except pianists) take a piano placement exam to determine the appropriate class within the 4-semester Class Piano sequence. Students placed in 901 must also take a placement exam as a follow-up to the online survey to ensure the best possible placement.
- Step 3: Once placed in the appropriate class, students complete the remainder of the class piano sequence. Once students have passed 904, their piano proficiency requirement has been fulfilled. Please note, keyboard classes are taken in conjunction with the corresponding theory/musicianship class.
Proficiency Exam
- At the end of the semester, students take the corresponding level of the proficiency exam.
- If students fail certain sections of the exam, they are required to retake and pass them by the third week of the following semester.
- In rare cases, some students might be permitted to take the piano proficiency exam for the following section.
College of Liberal Arts students: Piano instruction is available for all levels of students, from beginning to advanced. Please contact Professor Dr. May Phang at mphang@depauw.edu for more information and placement.

Auditions for first-year woodwind, brass, percussion, harp and keyboard students that must participate in large instrumental ensembles (music majors and CLA Honor Performance Award participants) will be held together the Monday (August 21) before school begins. Each musician should select a “home” ensemble's audition repertoire from which to audition. All major instrumental ensemble directors, Craig Paré (Bands), Steven Snyder (Jazz Ensemble) and Orcenith Smith (Orchestra) will sit on a panel to hear all students auditioning.
All string players (regardless of year in school) will audition for Professor Smith before school begins and should contact him at osmith@depauw.edu.

College of Liberal Arts Students
College of Liberal Arts majors interested in pursuing a music minor, adding a music major, or transferring to the School of Music should contact piano professor Dr. May Phang at mphang@depauw.edu at their earliest convenience to discuss options and any audition requirements.
